Still life, nature morte: can we approach man’s situation in an urban, post-industrial culture using such notions? At first glance – no, because not only the speed but also the forms of information processing in contemporary culture significantly differ from those which were used in the 17th century. Nonetheless, the discoveries made in this spatiotemporal cut from the history of ideas constitute our present thought, whether it be with respect to hygiene, the structure of the universe or the construction of an individual cell.
During this period religious-mythological consciousness experienced a rapid decline.
