'Alice in bed' is based on Alice James' life and diary. She was the sister of Henry James, one of the major 19th century American writers (Portrait of a Lady, The Europeans, The Death) and William James, an important American psychologist and moral philosopher. Alice James opposed to the restrictions 19th century society imposed upon women. She was talented and original but became totally paralysed by her family's high expectations.
The big, central question in 'Alice in bed' is: how to live? It is a question Alice has no answer to, not even the beginning of an answer.
