The remodeled "Deichtorhallen," which were formerly used as a hall for the flower market in Hamburg, were opened for art exhibitions in 1989. Contemporary works by international artists are shown in single as well as group exhibitions; retrospectives and thematic shows are staged in the space.
The "Deichtorhallen" enjoy an impeccable international reputation, based upon the six to eight annual exhibitions of art and art history which are consistently representative of an extremely high international standard.
The gallery therefore has established itself as an important platform for creative art after 1945.
In September 2003 the "International House of Photography" began exhibiting in the south side of the "Deichtorhallen."
