Richard Gray graduated from the Fashion BA (Hons) course at Middlesex University in 1990. As a first year student, his illustrations were entered for a worldwide memorial competition for Antonio Lopez, and spotted by Anna Piaggi. This led to his first editorial commissions for his illustrations for Vanity and for Anna Piaggi’s D.P. pages for Vogue Italia.
Since graduating, he has worked as a fashion illustrator for designers and magazines in London, Paris, Milan and New York. Designers he has worked with include Agent Provocateur, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, De Beers, Boudicca, Julien MacDonald, Antonio Berardi, Miguel Adrover , Winni Lok and Benjamin Kirchhoff.
His editorial work has included, amongst others: Vogue Italia, Vogue Gioiello, Vogue Pelle, V Magazine, Io Donna, Sleek, Entertainment Weekly, The Sunday Telegraph Magazine, Madame Figaro ( including the cover), and the cover of Flaunt Magazine. He has illustrated the couture shows for the Observer Magazine, and the Independent on Saturday Magazine.
He has exhibited in both solo and group shows. In 2004 he illustrated for Alexander McQueen for the ‘Fashion at Belsay’ exhibition at Belsay Hall.
He also illustrated for Alexander McQueen’s ‘Black Exhibition’.
A collaboration with Boudicca in 2000 produced an exhibition called ‘Plans for a Woman’. His work was included in a group exhibition of illustrators called ‘Line’ in 2003.
