Elfie Semotan was born in the Austrian province of Upper Austria. After graduating in 1960 from the fashion school Hetzendorf she worked as a professional model for seven years. In 1967 she returned to Vienna and started to work as a photographer.
She changed Austrian fashion photography with her billboards for Austrian underwear manufacturer Palmers, shot award-winning campaigns and was twice given the honour of with two Austrian prizes. Since 1995 she has been prolifically doing editorial shots for international magazines Vogue, Esquire, Elle, Maria Claire, Harper’s Bazaar, as well as travel shots and portraits.
Her collaboration with Helmut Lang started in 1986 when the two met, in 1997 she published her first book “Hair”. Her works have been exhibited in the Semperdepot and the photo gallery Westlicht in Vienna. She moved to New York in 1998.
Elfie Semotan does not consider herself a fashion photographer in the classic sense, the most important elements in her work are people and moods. Fashion is only represented as an addition to that, although the co-operation with stylists is very important to her.
