Helmut Lang Flagship Parfumerie

The freestanding Parfumerie opened in New York City in September 2000 at 81 Greene Street, directly across from the Soho flagship fashion boutique at 80 Greene Street.

The concept of this freestanding store is that of a traditional European parfumerie, with modern elements in product, atmosphere and design. Architect Richard Gluckman of Gluckman Mayner & Associates collaborated with Lang on this project. Gluckman is also responsible for the design of the flagship clothing store and several shop-in-shops in international department stores.

Conceptual artist Jenny Holzer created an installation specifically for the Parfumerie. Holzer's LED-poem including lines such as "I tease you. I breathe you. I smell you on my skin." are perpetually moving atop one of the walls.

Architecturally and esthetically, the 2500 square-foot Parfumerie is rooted in the model of an old-world apothecary. Just like the parfum bottle, it is very modern, solid and sculptural, yet gives the sense as if it has existed forever. The downstairs level houses offices and laboratories for research and development of further parfumerie products. A variety of specialty items exclusive to the Parfumerie are released regularly.
